Sump pump replacement means removing an old, failing, or undersized pump and installing a new one in its place, typically in the existing pit if it's still in good condition. This is different from a repair – replacement is the right call when a pump is old enough that another repair is just delaying the inevitable, when it's clearly undersized for how much water the property deals with, or when it's failed outright and repair isn't a practical option anymore.
Signs pointing toward replacement rather than repair include a pump that's over seven to ten years old and starting to show issues, a motor that's burned out entirely, a pump that runs constantly and still can't keep up with water volume during storms, or one that's failed at the worst possible time and left you dealing with a flooded basement. If a pump has already failed once during a significant storm, that's often a strong signal it's not going to hold up through the next one either.
We start by assessing the existing pit and pump setup to determine whether the current pump was ever properly sized for the property's water volume, since replacing like-for-like isn't always the right move if the old pump was undersized to begin with. We remove the old pump, inspect the pit itself for any damage or debris buildup, and install a new pump properly sized for the property, connected to the existing discharge line or a new one if the old line has issues. We test the complete system under real water conditions before finishing, confirming the float switch, pump activation, and discharge are all working correctly together.
Cost depends on pump size and capacity needed, whether the existing pit and discharge line are in good shape or need work too, and whether you want to add a battery backup at the same time, which is often worth doing during a replacement since the labor overlaps. Homes in Forest Lakes, AZ replacing a pump that's already failed during a flood sometimes need cleanup addressed alongside the replacement itself.
